WHY SO MANY BUGS? — AN HONEST NOTE FROM THE TEAM
Closed beta · Mir Vengeance
Morning all —
A few of you have asked (politely and otherwise) why early play keeps turning up rough edges. Fair question. Here’s the straight answer.
This isn’t a stock Crystal server with a fresh coat of paint
Yes — Mir Vengeance started from Crystal source and files. That gave us a foundation everyone recognises.
What we’re actually running is a different animal. Over the last stretch we’ve changed almost everything under the hood: how accounts, characters, items, quests, NPCs, and the world are stored and loaded.
The goal was never “another Crystal clone” — it was to keep the original Mir feel people love (the pacing, the towns, the hunt) while building something that can stay up and stay fair for a long time.
When you rebuild storage and systems like that, some behaviour doesn’t survive the trip.
A quest flag that used to live in one place now lives in another.
A shop “buy” that used to tick a counter silently stops ticking.
A visit range that “just worked” in the old layout suddenly covers half the province.
That’s not you being unlucky — that’s conversion loss.
We’re finding it the same way you are: by playing, and by reading your posts.
One bug report often kills a whole family of bugs
This part matters, and it’s why we’re genuinely grateful for every report — even the short ones, even the frustrated ones.
A single clear report (“buy weapon didn’t register at Smith”) isn’t one broken quest.
It’s usually a shared rule — how shop buys are recorded, how stacks count, how sell vs buy-back works.
Fix that rule and you can clear dozens of similar quests in one go.
Same with visit NPCs, kill counters, timed deliveries, tracker text.
So when you take five minutes to write “this felt wrong,” you’re not nagging us.
You’re often handing us the key to 60 quieter bugs you haven’t hit yet.
Quests especially work that way.
We mean it when we say: every bug and mistake you point out helps.
The client is a rebuild too
The game client isn’t the old SlimDX / LegendClient stack either.
It’s been rebuilt for a modern graphics path and .NET 10 — roughly 90% different from the client many of you grew up with.
That rewrite was hard. Really hard. Getting Mir’s look, click feel, and UI to stand up again on a modern stack took a long time — and we’re honestly chuffed to be sitting on a client that’s about 98% working in closed beta.
Mir is a grid world: walls, roofs, doors, NPCs, Y-sorting, click boxes — thousands of little squares that have to line up.
When you change how those draw and how input is handled, you will get graphic quirks, click weirdness, and “that used to work” push-back.
We expect that. We’ll keep sanding it down. Your screenshots and “I clicked here and X happened” notes are gold.
Here’s why we did it anyway — and why the remaining bugs are worth it:
- We can move to .NET 11 (and whatever comes after) when we need to — same path modern apps use.
- We can keep updating the client forever instead of freezing on a dead graphics stack.
- In five years you won’t be asked to run some half-dodgy hack on your PC just to keep playing. We’ll keep the client current and working.
- That’s how modern games stay alive. Old Mir clients often can’t. We chose the harder road now so the shard can last.
What we’re asking of you — and what we promise
Closed beta exists so this phase happens before public open, not after.
- Report anything that feels off — bugs, impressions, strong opinions. All welcome.
- Good and bad. We won’t take feedback personally. Thick skin is part of the job.
- If you can, include character name and the quest #number (now shown in-game). Speeds everything up.
We’re building toward a stable, long-lived Mir server that people can settle into — not a flash launch that falls apart in a month.
That takes patience from us and honesty from you. You’ve already given us a lot of the second. Thank you.
This is also why we are looking at a public opening on Saturday 31 October 2026 · 09:00 UK.
Keep the posts coming. We’re reading them.
